The Daruma represents perserverance, focus, and discipline. When you recieve a daruma you make a wish in the form of an important goal you wish to achieve. You fill in the left eye, then when you're goal comes to fruition you fill in the right eye. The daruma watches over you and keeps you motivated and serves as a reminder to keep going.

The somewhat dark story behind the Daruma states that the buddhist monk, Bodhidharma, spent nine years in meditation while staring at the sun until his arms and legs atrophied and he became blind, hence the round shape of his body and blank eyes.
